WINNER’S WAY

6th Nov 2016

It isn’t easy to win at a Hong Kong debut in Class Three but Price Bloodstock product Winner’s Way did just that on Sunday at Sha Tin and trainer Tony Cruz had plenty of confidence that he could do it.

Winner’s Way won two out of three starts in Australia and looks to be continuing that progress right from the word go in Hong Kong.

A little slow early, he finished full of running over 1400m to arrive In the final strides like a horse on the way up.

“I don’t know if he’s top class but he does have a future and I’m not surprised that he won,” Cruz said.

The trainer had landed a big gamble earlier in the day with stable first starter in Class Four and that gave him extra confidence that Winner’s Way would produce something good on debut.

“Neither of them showed much in their barrier trials but they have been working together since and working very well,” he said. “I knew they had both improved since the trials so when the first one won, my expectations were even higher that Winner’s Way would go well.”

A son of Starcraft, Winner’s Way has the right make up to him to think he’ll run at least a strong mile.

“I’m sure that he’ll get further later on in his campaign but I’ll probably keep him to 1400m just for the moment while he settles in,” said Cruz.
