MONEY BOY

Price Bloodstock’s Money Boy wasn’t the punter’s pal but he was at his best on Wednesday night as he swept home at Happy Valley to score his third victory and take his stake earnings within sight of $5 million.

For a horse who has only won three races, Money Boy’s prizemoney tally is something of a surprise but his record shows that when he doesn’t win he is usually earning his owners a cheque of some kind – from 27 starts, he has posted 15 top four finishes as well as his victories.

Money Boy has often been a favourite in races but punters forgot all about him on Wednesday night, sending him out at 25-1 before he came flying home for Brett Prebble.

“He tries hard and rarely runs a bad race,” said trainer John Size. “If the opportunity presents itself to get into a finish, he’s usually there fighting it out. All those placings might not make him the punters’ favourite but he has been very good for his owners. A bit of rain tonight probably slowed the track down a little and I think that suited him too.”

Prebble said Size had stressed he should make his run out wide on Money Boy and the jockey went to great pains to make sure that was how it happened, arriving right on the line to score.

“It wasn’t that I was saving him for a late run, I just wanted to make sure we got out to clear running, no interference, on the outside,” he explained. “John thought there was a fast lane out there so we wanted to use that from the wide draw we had and I was careful to carry out the instructions to the letter.”

It was Prebble’s second win from three rides on the horse so he looks like he has the key to Money Boy scoring more wins in the future.
