CARROLL STREET

Price Bloodstock’s Hong Kong season has been filled with hot prospects for the future and another three-year-old added his name to the list after Carroll Street hacked up at Sha Tin on Wednesday night.

Already, the Price Bloodstock talents unveiled in 2020-21 include Courier Wonder, Sight Success and Fantastic Way but Carroll Street showed he is right up with that group.

Opposed to a white hot favourite in unbeaten Winner Method, Douglas Whyte-trained Carroll Street was sent out at generous odds as a result but onlookers could have been forgiven for thinking he was the runner who was odds-on, as he never looked like losing under apprentice Jerry Chau and put up a cosy winning margin that didn’t surprise his trainer.

“He’s progressively got better all of the time, Whyte said. “Since his first run, the writing was on the wall with what he can do. He hasn’t been the flashiest in time up until tonight but I’ve known all along what ability he has got. He’s a very young individual. He just needed a bit of time and he’s certainly finding his way now. The thing that satisfied me most tonight was the fact he could lay up with them and not get out of his ground. Up till now, he has been a bit wayward out of the gates and when you step up in class it’s hard to do that and win.”

The victory was Carroll Street’s third in four starts down the straight and he enjoyed a big handicap advantage over the favourite but Whyte believes the best is all ahead of the youngster.

“You can never come here and be too bullish but, at the weights, I knew I would have a reasonable chance,” Whyte said. “He’s done a fantastic job already. I’ll assess him now but I would ultimately like to stop him and bring him back next season. He’s done everything right from the word go but mentally, he hasn’t even woken up yet. He’s a baby and will appreciate a bit of time off now.”
